Mining

Hoist ropes, shovel ropes, and dragline ropes for surface and underground mining operations worldwide.

Overview

Mining is one of the most punishing environments for wire rope — abrasive dust, extreme temperatures, high-impact shock loads, and rope lengths that can exceed several thousand metres in deep shaft applications.

WireCo manufactures hoist ropes for mine shaft winding, shovel ropes for electric rope shovels and draglines, and specialty ropes for slope hoisting and personnel conveyances. Our mining ropes are built for the specific abuse profiles of mining duty — not adapted from crane or general-purpose constructions.

With deep experience in mining applications worldwide, WireCo's technical team supports rope selection, installation, and retirement planning for surface and underground operations.

Key Challenges in Mining

The problems WireCo products are engineered to solve.

Abrasive Environments
Dust, rock debris, and abrasive particles wear wire rope at an accelerated rate. Shovel ropes in particular are dragged through material that grinds against outer wires every cycle.
Extreme Rope Lengths for Deep Shafts
Deep mine shafts require hoist ropes exceeding 2,000 metres in length. Self-weight, stretch, and torsional behavior at these lengths create engineering challenges that short ropes never face.
High-Impact Shock Loads
Mining operations involve sudden loads — shovel digging forces, skip loading impacts, and emergency braking events. Ropes must absorb energy without structural damage to core or strands.
Remote Location Logistics
Many mining operations are in remote locations where replacement rope lead times can be measured in weeks. Unplanned rope failure creates extended downtime and significant production loss.

How WireCo Delivers

01
Mining-Specific Rope Construction

Union TufMax and XtraPak ropes are designed specifically for the abuse profiles of mining — abrasion-resistant outer wires, crush-resistant strand arrangements, and high-strength cores that withstand the shock loads of shovel, dragline, and hoist duty. These are purpose-built mining ropes, not adapted from general-purpose constructions.

02
Deep Shaft Engineering Expertise

For deep mine hoist applications, WireCo engineers work directly with mine operators to specify ropes that account for self-weight, stretch characteristics, and torsional behavior at extreme lengths. Union Super Tuf ropes are available in configurations engineered for shafts exceeding 2,000 metres.

03
Stocking Programs for Remote Operations

WireCo offers managed inventory programs that position replacement ropes at or near mine sites, ensuring rapid availability when discard criteria are reached. Combined with predictable discard behavior, this approach eliminates the risk of extended downtime from unplanned rope failure at remote locations.
